Vaishali (Wyl. yangs pa can) was at the time of the Buddha Shakyamuni the capital city of the Lichhavis. It is the place where the Buddha gave his last teaching before proceeding to Kushinagara, and where the second council was held 100 years after the parinirvana of the Buddha. It is also near Vaishali that Ananda past into nirvana.
