Gongpo (Tib. འགོང་པོ་, Wyl. 'gong po) demons are one of the most powerful of demonic forces; they actually create a lot of the negativity in the world. When he was in Tibet, Guru Rinpoche subjugated and buried the gongpo demons, but some lamas feel that the events of the Cultural Revolution may have allowed some of them to escape again. Gongpo are particularly harmful to the state and government, especially a group known as 'the nine gongpo brothers'. Langdarma, the ninth-century Tibetan king who tried to suppress the Dharma, is traditionally considered to have been possessed by a gongpo.
