The discipline of a bodhisattva is threefold (Tib. བྱང་སེམས་ཀྱི་˙ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་གསུམ་, Wyl. tshul khrims gsum). It consists of:

  1. the discipline of restraining from evil activity, (Tib. ཉེས་སྤྱོད་སྡོམ་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་, Wyl. nyes spyod sdom pa’i tshul khrims)
  2. the discipline of gathering virtue, (Tib. དགེ་བ་འི་˙ཆོས་སྡུད་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ , Wyl. dge ba'i chos dud kyi tshul khrims) and
  3. the discipline of bringing benefit to beings (Tib. སེམས་ཅན་དོན་བྱེད་པའི་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་, Wyl. sems can don byed kyi tshul khrims).[1]
