The five insignia (Wyl. phyag mtshan lnga) are the hand implements of the buddhas of the five families:

  • Buddha family: eight-spoked wheel
  • Vajra family: vajra
  • Ratna family: jewel
  • Padma family: lotus
  • Karma family: double vajra or sword.
