Lhasa (Wyl. lha sa), literally 'the place of the gods', is the capital of Tibet and the home of the Dalai Lamas. It is also the site of the Jokhang, Tibet's most sacred temple and most popular pilgrimage destination. The town was originally called Rasa ('place of the goat') but this was changed to Lhasa following the consecration of the Jokhang.
