Born in 1985 in Kham, Eastern Tibet, the Karmapa organized his escape from Tibet at the age 14, crossing the perilous Himalayas in mid-winter. The 17th Karmapa currently lives in Gyütö Monastery near Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government in exile and the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
