Phurba (Wyl. phur pa; Skt. kīlaya) — a ritual dagger with a pointed three-edge blade, such as that held by the deity Vajrakilaya.

Four Phurbas

According to the tradition of Vajrakilaya, there are four phurbas:

  1. kyérim sipé phurba: the kyérim, or generative phase of the phurba of existence.
  2. tsenma dzé kyi phurba: the actual material phurba
  3. dzogrim changsem phurba: the dzogrim or dissolution phase, of the phurba of bodhichitta.
  4. rigpa dön gyi phurba: the absolute phurba of rigpa.
