Every song in this book is a complete teaching within itself. While there are threads throughout the songs related to subjects that encompass the entire path, touching on everything from the preliminary practices ([[Ngöndro]] through [[Tögal]], each teaching is a unique and extemporaneous song in response to a specific student, and acknowledging their experience at that point in their practice and lives.

Unpacking these teachings reveals the minds of the disciples to whom Dudjom Lingpa is responding. The Songs of Realization is a collection of 132 songs of teaching and realization, presented by Dudjom Lingpa as advice in response to various disciples over the years. Every song in this book is a complete teaching within itself. While there are threads throughout the songs related to subjects that encompass the entire path, touching on everything from the preliminary practices (Ngöndro) through Tögal, each teaching is a unique and extemporaneous song in response to a specific student, and acknowledging their experience at that point in their practice and lives.

Unpacking these teachings reveals the minds of the disciples to whom Dudjom Lingpa is responding. His answers provide a mirror through which readers can see where these students’ interests lie, or what obstacles they are confronting. This gives us a unique and intimate perspective into both the lama’s wisdom mind and the disciple’s experience. Readers will return to these songs over and over at different points in their lives and spiritual development, finding wisdom in new and surprising ways at every visit.
