Vaishali (Skt. Vaiśālī; Tib. ཡངས་པ་ཅན་, yangpachen, Wyl. yangs pa can) was at the time of the Buddha Shakyamuni the capital city of the Licchavis. It is the place where the Buddha gave his last teaching before proceeding to Kushinagara, and where the second council (see Three Buddhist Councils) was held 100 years after the parinirvana of the Buddha. It is also near Vaishali that Ananda passed into nirvana.

At present, it is the town of Basarh, Muzaffarpur district, in Tirhut, Bihar province of India.
