Prakriti [Skt.] (wyl. gtso bo) - 'primal substance', the fundamental nature of reality according to the Samkhya philosophy. It has six special features:

  1. it is the agent of actions
  2. it is unborn and permanent
  3. it is unitary
  4. it is only an object and can not be a subject. It is the object of enjoyment of the person (purusha).
  5. it pervades all animate and inanimate objects.
  6. it is unmanifest and an equilibrium of the three qualities.
