Nyima Bum was born to [[Shyangtön Tashi Dorje]]. While he was in the womb, his mother dreamed of many suns rising at once. He named the child ''Nyima Bum'' ('A Hundred Thousand Sons'). Between the ages of five and nine, the boy was taught by his father, who gave him all of the [[empowerment]]s, teachings, and instructions of the secret Nyingtik cycles, like one vase filling another. At a ceremony of enthronement when he was ten, he astonished all of the students present by giving a discourse on the [[seventeen tantras]], the principles of which he practised assiduously and exclusively until he was twenty.
