Kyabjé is a mark of respect for very high lamas, whose realisation and powers are extraordinary. Few are the lamas who are called in this way. For example among today's nyingma lamas it is used for example for Kyabjé Trulshik Rinpoche and Kyabjé Penor Rinpoche. The term means lord (jé) of refuge (kyab), meaning that it is someone who has the capacity to protect us from the suffering of samsara and its causes, the mental afflictions. It is sometimes rendered into English as 'His Holiness' or 'His Eminence'.
