Pretension (Skt. māyā; Tib. སྒྱུ་, Wyl. sgyu) — one of the fifty-one mental states defined in Abhidharma literature. According to the Compendium of Abhidharma, it belongs to the subgroup of the twenty subsidiary destructive emotions.

Definitions

In the Khenjuk, Mipham Rinpoche says:

  • Tib.
  • Pretension is to deceive others through what is untrue, pretending to possess virtuous qualities which one doesn’t have, for the sake of such things as honour and gain. It belongs to the category of delusion and desire, and forms the support for the destructive emotions and subsidiary destructive emotions, as well as for wrong livelihood. (Rigpa Translations)
